Johnny Miles Voted Best Running Event by Run Nova Scotia for 2012
Race Director and Chair of the Johnny Miles Running Event Weekend Terry Curley holds the Event of the Year award that was voted by members of Run Nova Scotia for 2012. The 2013 event takes place in Downtown New Glasgow on June 15 and 16.
NEW GLASGOW, NS, February 8, 2013……..”That the 2012 edition of the Johnny Miles Running Event was sold out weeks prior to the event is a real testament to how participants feel about the event,” says Race Director Terry Curley. And that level of interest would certainly have been reward enough for the event organizing committee but the “icing on the cake” came when the Johnny Miles Marathon was also voted the Best Overall Run Nova Scotia event as voted on by Run Nova Scotia members at the annual awards banquet for 2102.
“This is a great honour,” says Race Director Terry Curley. “This award is voted on by members so that is a very meaningful measurement of how the members feel about our event. The fact that we sold out last year was proof enough that we have a good thing here but this was a recognition that is a lasting legacy for the event and all of its volunteers and sponsors,” adds Curley.
“The Johnny Miles Running Event has become a part of our community’s identity and heritage says,” New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan. “We now have multiple generations who have been a part of this extraordinary event. The atmosphere and excitement it brings to the Downtown creates a memorable community gathering and makes it a place that residents are proud to call their own as well as a destination to which visitors want to return.”
Race Director Curley says that the 2013 event will build on this momentum and that the committee will not rest on any laurels but rather is always looking for ways to make the event more user-friendly and more convenient for participants.
In keeping with this goal, the one change this year will be the change in venues for Saturday’s festivities.
Registration, Race Kit Pick Up and the Carbo Loading Meal will be moved from the John Brother MacDonald Stadium to the Glasgow Square Theatre. Although at a smaller venue, Registration, Race Kit Pick Up and the Pasta Meal will be available all day rather than just for limited hours as in past years.
“The Johnny Miles Running Event is a sports tourism event of major significance for the region with benefits that range from economic impact, to marketing profile, to community pride,” says New Glasgow’s Marketing and Communications Director Kim Dickson. “This volunteer driven and community supported event goes off like clockwork and is a well-oiled machine. That the event has garnered a provincial honour by Run Nova Scotia members brings great honour and recognition to the town and the region.”
Cindy MacKinnon, Managing Director of the Destination Eastern and Northumberland Shores (DEANS) regional tourist association agrees that the JMM Running Event Weekend makes a big impact on the tourism assets of the Pictou County community. “Our region is well known for our festivals and events. Their dedicated volunteers are the key to each one’s success. The JMM event is no exception; a fantastic volunteer organizing committee make visitors feel a sense of pride and community, while making this event an icon for the Northumberland Shore and Nova Scotia,” says Ms. MacKinnon. “We’re in very good hands when we have such great ambassadors showcasing what we have to offer. “
Saturday will look the same on the street as far as events go. The Johnny Walk will get under way on Saturday, June 15 at 9:00 am, followed by the Tim Hortons/Subway Kids Fun Run at 10:00. Both these events will start in front of the historic New Glasgow Town Hall. The Kids Run saw a record crowd last year of 600 participants and the same is expected this year. There is no cost for children to enter and everyone receives a t-shirt, medal and post-race Subway meal.
Registration and Race Kit Pick Up will open at 9:00 on Saturday at Glasgow Square Theatre and will continue all day until 7:00 pm. A drop in pasta meal will be available from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. There will be no official ceremonies on Saturday so participants can come at their leisure to get registered and do their carbo loading at the same time. There will be a brief awards ceremony prior to the race starting on Sunday morning.
On Sunday, June 16, all running events will begin at 9:00 am in front of Town Hall. The Empire Theatre 5km Student Challenge and the CIBC Wood Gundy 5Km will go first at 9:00 am followed at 9:05 am by the Scotsburn Dairy 10km, the Advocate Half Marathon and The Maritime Auto “Big Dog” Marathon. The Michelin Post Race Awards and Lunch will get underway as soon as the first participants finish their race.
